How donated Aeroplan miles are allowing uOttawa students to volunteer abroad!

Thanks to generous donations from friends of the University of Ottawa, we have successfully collected several Aeroplan miles through the Aeroplan Charitable Pooling Plan. This initiative will be used to provide airline tickets to travel to overseas volunteer projects.  CGCE is very grateful to all the donors who contributed their extra miles.

This year, thanks to these generous Aeroplan donations, four lucky students will be awarded Aeroplan miles to support their volunteer efforts abroad:

Jemy Joseph flag of members statesJemy Joseph is working as an intern with the Department of Patient Safety at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Her project focuses on supporting partnership-based approaches that advocate for patient safety as a precondition to providing health care in Africa and that strengthen health systems, assist in building local capacity and help reduce medical error and patient harm. When Jemy learned that she had  been selected to receive these extra Aeroplan miles, she was ecstatic and ran to tell  her family: “To have a major expense of my summer volunteer journey taken care of has put me a lot more at ease mentally and financially.  I can focus more on my upcoming research rather than worry about financing this expensive endeavour.  I hope that my experience with the World Health Organization in Geneva will give me a strong perspective on influencing healthcare at a global level, and equip me with skills that I can bring back to improve the healthcare system in Canada as a future physician.”

In cooperation with various child and infant nutrition centres, Gabrielle Helal, Meagan Bourret and Marie-Christine Robitalle have traveled to Burkina Faso to work with the pediatric services of Bobo-Dioulasso University Hospital to promote nutrition in the community. The three students have participated in several different prevention activities, including malnutrition detection, nutrition education and health promotion.

Do you have extra Aeroplan miles that you would like to put to good use? Donate them and see how a uOttawa student can contribute to positive change in local and global communities:
